TeleTan encrypts every message on your device, with keys that are generated there and never uploaded. Our servers carry ciphertext they cannot read — and delete it the moment it is delivered.

Built to know as little as possible

Most apps promise not to look at your messages. TeleTan is arranged so that it cannot.

Keys never leave your phone

Your identity key is created on your device and stays there. TeleTan has no copy, so there is nothing for us to hand over, lose in a breach, or be compelled to produce.

The Signal protocol

X3DH key agreement and the Double Ratchet — the same design that underpins Signal and WhatsApp. Every message gets a fresh key, so a key compromised today cannot unlock yesterday.

No phone number

Sign up with a username. Your phone number is not an account identifier, is not requested, and cannot be used to find you.

Your contacts stay on your phone

No address-book upload. TeleTan never sees who is in your contacts, because it never asks for them.

No directory to browse

There is no user search and no people-you-may-know. You find someone because they gave you their username — which means nobody can walk our user list either.

Delivered, then deleted

Encrypted messages wait on the server only until your device collects them, then they are erased. What we do not keep cannot be taken.

What TeleTan does not claim

Security writing is full of promises that quietly do not hold. Here is the honest edge of ours.

The limits, stated plainly

We can still see some metadata. Delivering a message means knowing which device to hand it to and roughly when. We keep that for as little time as delivery requires, but we will not pretend it does not exist.
Encryption cannot protect a compromised phone. If malware controls your unlocked device, it can read what you read. No messenger solves this, and any that says otherwise is selling something.
This is not anonymity. Your connection still has an IP address. TeleTan hides what you say, not that you were online.
Nothing stops the person you message. They can screenshot, photograph or repeat anything you send. Encryption protects the path, not the recipient.
Lose your device, lose your history. There is no server-side copy to restore from — that is the direct cost of us not holding your keys.

In development

TeleTan is being built in the open and is not released yet. One-to-one encrypted messaging works today; groups, attachments and voice are on the way. Join the list and we will tell you when there is something worth trying — not before.
